Aging in Place Inspections

5 Key Safety Areas to Address for Aging in Place

Our homes can start to present unexpected safety hazards as we age. Fortunately, you can be proactive and put a plan in place for yourself or family members to ensure your home remains safe for daily life. At Trident Inspection Group, we offer aging in place inspections to help identify areas of concern for seniors or those with physical limitations. Let’s explore five key areas that we will focus on to address safety risks in a home so that you can create a secure, comfortable, and accessible space.

1. Fall Prevention

Fall prevention is essential since falling is one of the top concerns when it comes to keeping seniors safe inside their homes. During the inspection, we will assess fall risks and ensure there are slip-resistant flooring and stairs, handrails, and ramps.

2. Bathroom Safety

In the bathroom, we will check to make sure that the fixtures and counters are appropriately sized. At least one bathroom on the main level needs to be wheelchair accessible and have slip-resistant surfaces. Also, there should be access to an emergency call button.

3. Electrical & Security

During the inspection, our experts will check the electrical, lighting, safety, and security systems of the home's exterior and interior. We will ensure the house number is clearly visible from the street for first responders. Also, the doors need to be accessible and secure with easy-to-use locks and knobs.

4. Kitchen Safety

Kitchen appliances, counters, and cabinets will be evaluated to ensure they are both easy to reach and use for aging home occupants. Each room, as well as passageways, must be easy to maneuver. Smoke detectors should be installed and working properly as well.

5. Bedroom Safety

The main living areas should be on a single story, including a full bathroom. If the home is multi-level, there should be a chair lift or residential elevator, and the laundry facilities should be on the same level as the master bedroom.
